The International Children’s Day was celebrated today by six Early Childhood Schools in Port Moresby. A total of 430 children, accompanied by their 30 teachers, gathered at the Port Moresby Nature Park as early as 9 a.m. to attend the WeCARe Foundation’s annual Christmas Picnic.
With the theme “Leave No Child Behind,” the event was well-coordinated and featured a variety of fun activities for the children. This annual event is organized by the WeCARe Foundation as part of its Early Childhood Development Program.
“We are so glad to be part of this event today. Our children are really enjoying themselves,” said Mr. Solomon, Head Teacher of Glynn Orphan Early Childhood School at Morata 2. This year’s picnic marked the return of the event after a four-year hiatus, making it an exciting experience for the children at the Nature Park.
Speaking at the event, WeCARe Foundation Acting Program Manager Sandra Ibene expressed gratitude to the major sponsor, Digicel Foundation, and other contributors who made the large-scale event possible. Digicel PNG Limited donated 500 school packs, which were distributed to students from all six schools. Additionally, RH Hypermart contributed over K2,000 worth of food items and other necessities for the day.
The highlight of the event was Santa Claus’s arrival, where he presented gifts to the students as they eagerly marched forward to meet him. Each child received a gift pack, filled with merchandise from Digicel and assorted stationery donated by various sponsors.
Present at the event were representatives from St. John Ambulance PNG, volunteers from De La Salle Secondary School, and WeCARe Foundation volunteers.
WeCARe Foundation PNG operates primarily in Port Moresby but has extended its impact to over 1,500 children and women in Lae and Kagua in the Southern Highlands. The foundation continues to make a difference through its community-centered initiatives.
